Learning about environment through fun of Bluey

Two Venturer Scouts from South Coast and Tablelands Region tapped into their Joey Scouts’ love of Bluey with a day built around the theme.

Nate Officer and Josh Priest, who are both on the Environment Team for the Region, decided to host the event as there were no Region-based events for Joey Scouts. They chose Bluey as it was a show everyone knew and loved, which also has “heaps of amazing episodes that have underlying environmental themes”.

“We had four activity bases running on the day, each with three to five activities to rotate around,” Nate said.

“These bases were loosely themed on episodes from Bluey. Most of our activities were adapted from other camps we have run as the SCT Environment Team. All our activities were run by a mixture of SCT Environment Team members and Leader/Venturer Scout support helpers.”

About 48 Joey Scouts with 13 siblings and 39 parents attended the day, with support from five youth helpers, 15 Leaders and six SCT Environment Team members. About 130 people were on-site, with most coming from South Coast and Tablelands, but also some out-of-Region participants and helpers from South Metropolitan Region.

The Bluey’s Big Adventure – Joey Fun Day’s bases were linked to four episodes – Camping, Fruit Bat, Rain and Creek. Activities included:

  • Planting native seedlings in pots
  • Learning about pollution through stormwater drains
  • Exploring rainbows and how they are made through STEM activities
  • Discovering the basics of following animal trails and identifying native Australian animal footprints.

Nate said the most popular activity was a rope bridge run by a team from Cataract Activity Centre.

“Joey Scouts had to the cross the rope bridge that goes over the creek filled with crocodiles, which were pool inflatables,” he said. “We also hand painted a 2m-tall Bluey for everyone to have photos next to on the day.

“I hope that everyone appreciated the environment around us a little bit more and learned about taking care of what is around them, while having lots of fun. Hopefully by bringing Groups from all over our Region together, new connections and friendships were formed.”
