Yes! Joey Scouts can do real archery thank to Tracey Hansford (State Leader – Archery), who is an Olympic-Recurve archer.
We used proper bare bows rated for children aged 5-10 and arrows with safety "marshmallows" over the tips.
Tracey introduced us all to the proper safety rules and showed the correct method of holding, loading and firing. Whistle commands were used, just like in a real archery range.
We hung milk bottles from the rafters as targets and also had thick, rubber targets (with bullseyes) on the floor. Half the Joey Scouts played games outside while the other half did archery, then swapped.
Every Joey Scout had six shots and showed improvement as they became used to the posture and strength needed to shoot further. Some hit and went past the targets, while others shot along the floor!
It didn't matter – they all obeyed the safety procedures and no one was disappointed.
This equipment is real, not toys, but the Joey Scouts paid close attention as they were keen to learn and do well.
The Leaders also had the chance to shoot with full-sized adult bows with mixed results! Tracey has also introduced archery to our Cub Scouts, with similar success.
If you are looking for a terrific activity at very reasonable cost, email Tracey and get a date booked in!
